So I’ve been reading for a while about how horrible mainstream deodorant is for you. I’ve always heard that the aluminum in it is bad for you but I never really knew why so here’s what my research said:
“Aluminum salts—in the form of aluminum chloride, aluminum zirconium, aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum hydroxybromide—prevent us from sweating when aluminum ions are drawn into the cells that line the sweat ducts, causing the cells to swell and squeezing the ducts closed so sweat cannot get out.” – Mother Earth Living
Aluminum is considered a neurotoxin linked to breast cancer and neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s. The link above explains how exactly. Now I’m not saying that aluminum is going to give you breast cancer or Alzheimer’s, but if we can avoid any risks associated to breast cancer, why not do so?
A lot of people seemed to go through a ton of trial and error finding a natural deodorant – there’s sticks, creams, and other weird methods like not wearing any at all at first (no thanks), but luckily the first one I tried worked perfectly.
So here’s the gist on Schmidt’s:
Helps neutralize odors naturally
Plant-based powders absorb wetness without use of aluminum
Scented with essential oils; no artificial fragrance
Free of aluminum, propylene glycol, paragons and phthalates – well Katie, wtf are those?
Propylene glycol is also an ingredient in antifreeze (yuck) but also something in a lot of skincare products so maybe take a look to make sure your products don’t have that as well. I keep reading that it’s okay in small doses but slathering your underarms with it everyday is more than a little so better safe than sorry right?
Phthalates are a group of chemicals that are used to make plastics more flexible and harder to break but it also helps deodorant stick to your skin and the fragrance to linger. It can be linked to disrupting testosterone function, and yes, ladies this is important to us too because it plays a role in our energy and muscle maintenance as explained here.
I’m not going to lie, my arm pits kind of freaked out at first, which I had heard was going to happen. The first week I wore it, I had some weird bumps like razor burn and some serious itchiness but I read that this was natural because your underarms aren’t necessarily used to not being plugged up by aluminum.
I was very skeptical that this stuff would work because honestly, I sweat a lot – girls are always cold but I’m always hot (redhead thing maybe?). If this stuff didn’t work, I would tell you or maybe you would have seen me sweating profusely. I read about a lot of people going through a stage of smelliness in the beginning because your armpits are producing more sweat because they’re not being plugged up with aluminum so they’re finally able to breathe.
But luckily, even though they were a little itchy and irritated during the first week, I was like “holy sh*t this stuff works better than real deodorant.” Literally, at the end of the day, after a workout and 10 hours of work, I did not smell a thing from my under arms. The fragrance had faded but who cares if I didn’t stink?
They have quite a few fragrances for men and women that actually smell good. Yes, it’s a few more bucks than regular deodorant but after reading about everything the ingredients in normal deodorant can do, I won’t be going back.
PS. If you live in Charlotte, the Metropolitan Target carries this. You can also find it on Amazon!
